Group Presentation

Our topic for the group presentation would be the importance of giving blood and how much it can do for another person. Giving blood is one of the greatest things one can do. One of the reasons why I would love to give a presentation on this is because I have a true passion for giving blood and I give it every time I get the chance too. One thing that sticks out to me about giving blood is every time you give blood, you can save up to 3 lives. I am a firm believer and karma, and I think whenever I do something such as give blood, good things will come back around for me. Did you know it only takes about 10 minutes to give blood? I know that all of us have really busy schedules, but let’s just be honest here; every single person can fork up 10 minutes to do such a great deed! 60% of the country is going to need blood at some point in their lifetime, yet only 5% of that population will receive blood.

If I were to do a presentation on this topic, I would really hit on the facts of how big of a deal it is for people to donate blood. I would like to present a video that shows these facts and has some pictures that tie in with donating blood. I would not want to make people for bad for never giving blood, but I would want to make my point across on how important it is to give blood. There are so many people out there that expect that will never have anything happen to them and they will never have to receive blood, but it can happen to anyone. A car crash, violent fight, or anything like these things can cause a human to have to receive blood. Please keep that in mind whenever you are debating on donating. You never know if you have a family member or close friend that is in need of blood.

Soccer in the United States

For my blog, I decided to write about one of the most trending topics in the United States of America right now. That topic is Women’s soccer and it has been trending in the past month or so. Soccer is a sport that is extremely popular in every other country in the world besides America. Most countries, live, breath, and eat soccer and it really is a way of life in most places. In America, the 3 biggest sports are football, baseball, and basketball. This has always been the 3 biggest sports and nobody has ever given soccer a chance. Last year, the national men’s soccer team played in the world cup and it attracted a lot of viewers. The men’s soccer team had a little bit of success, but it opened the eyes of the soccer world to a lot of people. For example, I never watched a soccer game until last year’s world cup, but by the end of the world cup I was watching every game and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Once you understand how the game works, soccer is one of the most entertaining sports to watch. They players are always moving and it is really amazing how good of athletes they are. This year summer soccer has been one of the most trending topics in the world. The US women’s national team went to the finals, and unfortunately the lost in penalty kicks to Japan. It was defiantly a huge upset, but it think it was great to see all the people who are really starting to watch soccer and start to care more about it. I was really impressed with the team and I tip my hat to them for all the work and effort they put into it. In the future, I really hope to see soccer continue to trend. People in this country are finally starting to give it a chance, and that is all I can ask for.

Jobs - My Dream Job

The four different jobs I chose were marketing/sales jobs in the Mobile, AL area. Most sales jobs have similar qualities they look for in a person. One of the main qualities they look for is someone who has work experience in sales. Most of these jobs would prefer you to have a few years of sales experience. Another big thing they look for is someone who has an outgoing personality and is energetic. I think something that most salesman need to have is self confidence. In my opinion, self confidence is one of the most important characteristics of a salesman. If someone has self confidence, they will feel more comfortable around people. This is really important because people with self confidence have the ability to walk in someone’s office and deliver a sale within 45 minutes. Some employers may have trouble seeing if a potential employee has self confidence, but some of the time, they can tell within 15 minutes of a job interview. There are certain questions that employers may ask that show the level of self confidence some has. These are the main things that employers look for when hiring someone to be a salesman.

I think I have a few different areas of major skills. I think the best thing going for me is my ability to work with people.  I have really good people skills and I know how to talk to people and bring good customer service to any business I work for. I think people skills, which is also known as human skills is one of the most important aspects in a person who is trying to succeed in the business world. People who know how to talk to people and know how to please them will go a long way. Also, one of my other main strengths is my work experience. I started working when I was 10 years for my dad. I was able to work because it was a family business and I was a big kid who could do manual labor. He taught me how to work hard and do things the right way. I have worked 6 or 7 different jobs in my life and I really think I have learned a lot from these jobs because they were all different, and I learned a lot of different stuff while working the jobs. Also, I am very familiar with Microsoft word, excel, and access. I have done several different projects using these different systems and I have learned how to master them. It is so important to be able to use Microsoft excel because a lot of projects in the business world are done using Microsoft excel.  I also have good leadership skills and I have been involved in a lot of different organizations on campus and have held executive positions in the organizations. I think this is a big asset for me because I have learned how to be an effective leader, manage people, and motivate them to do things.

The job that I want to pursue is the Director of Sales position at Fokker Airinc. I would love to have this position because it is a well paying job, and I have an interest in what the company does. I would love to get hired to be the Director of Sales for a company because you get the opportunity to be creative and help design marketing plans for the company. I really think I would fit the position well because I consider myself to be creative and I think I would be good at developing and instilling marketing plans and strategies. Honestly, this job would be hard to get right out of college, but everyone has to have goals, and it would it is a goal of mine to get a job similar to this at some company. I honestly believe I have what it takes to take a position like this and I have the work ethic and organizational skills to be in this position. Business Communication

Being professional in every type of communication is really important in the business world. Before anyone sends an email, they should always use spell check and make sure there is no grammatical errors in the email. Everyone has some type of idea they get about someone when the meet them for the first time. If you send an email to a potential customer, and it looks like a student who is in kindergarten wrote it, then they are probably going to look at the email and laugh and they might not even consider doing business with you. Also, it is even worse if someone sends an error written formal email that is discussing some type of formal topic. This looks really bad on the person who wrote it, and it looks even worse on the company. I know we all have had emails were we have errors in them, but it is always important to check them for errors. I am someone who is guilty of making errors in emails and I am going to be a senior in college. I know that is really sad, but people with masters and PhD’s do the same thing. One of the things I want to get out of this class is cutting back on the grammatical errors in any type of written communication that I use. Here is the email revised:

We discussed requiring my computer operators to perform the very time-consuming task of comparing their entries against the time sheets from which your clerks are miscopying.

My employees don’t have the time to correct the errors made by your people, and I won’t hire additional help for such work.

I recommend that you tell your clerks to review their work carefully before giving it to the computer operators.

The Good and the Bad

In today’s world of technology, prospective students who have interest in a university have everything they need to know from the internet. Every university has some type of webpage and some of them are really good, and some of them are awful. From a marketing standpoint, it is essential for a university to have a sharp looking website that is easy to navigate through. There is nothing more frustrating than a parent and their child trying to find some information on a university that they have interest in and they have no idea where to go or what to do. The two different university websites I looked at and reviewed are Mississippi State University and Troy University. I took a close look at both of their college of business webpage’s. I was really impressed with Mississippi States website.  Everything was really organized and it was really easy to navigate through the website. Every degree that’s offered in their college of business has a semester by semester breakdown of each class that the prospective student needs to take.  They also have a link that shows students where they can find potential internships while they are in college. I think this is great idea because internships are so important in today and it can really separate student during a job interview. The internship page shows different internships with companies around the Starkville area. Another important thing they have is a ling to student organizations. The link shows different business organizations that students can join. In my opinion, it is really important for students to be involved with their university and it looks really good if they are in some type of business fraternity or organization. These organizations are a great way for students to meet people, make connections that could possibly land them a job one day. The second university website I looked at was the Troy University. I was not impressed with Troy’s college of business website and I had some trouble finding what I was looking for. The website was not decorated very well and I thought it was kind of plain. It was harder to find the curriculum for the different majors offered by the university. In conclusion, I think I learned a lot about how important a good website looks. I tried to put myself in the position if a high school student who had interest in these 2 different universities. After reviewing the 2 websites, Mississippi State defiantly has the upper hand when it comes to websites. Whenever you view a website, you want it to be easy to navigate around the site and try to find and much useful information as possible. As much as I hate Mississippi State, I must admit they have an outstanding website and was one of the best looking ones that I have ever seen. I firmly believe that a good, well designed website is very important for a university to have and it may influence a prospective student’s decision on what college they plan on choosing. "How to Win Friends and Influence People"

To be honest, there aren’t too many pieces of reading that I have read in the College of Business. Business majors do not have to read a lot of articles or read books. There is one book that I had to read and it was called “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. This was one of the best books I have ever read in my life and it really gave me inspiration. The book talks about how to deal with people and influence them to believe the way you think. It teaches you how to be a good leader and how to deal with people. In my opinion, I think every business major in the world should be required to read it. The writer is discussing the issues of how to deal with people and how to train you to be a people’s person and how to be a successful, hard working leader. The topic raises issues to people who are socially awkward in the business world and need to learn how to be successful. The author of this book is Dale Carnegie. Dale Carnegie is one of the most successful authors and businessmen to ever live. He has written 6 books that are related to business and communication in business. Carnegie is firm believer in doing the right thing at all times, and he takes a different approach than most people in the business world. He think that the whenever you are in a position as a boss or manager, you should always ask people in a nice manner to do the task. He is never stern about the way he talks to people, and he always takes a laid back approach. His main target is salesman, managers, and executives in businesses all across the world. Carnegie takes a laid back approach in the book. The book is not intense, but it’s not too boring to read. Carnegie is full of wise words and wisdom. Throughout the book, he gives so many different tips that are helpful to businessmen and women everywhere. Carnegie is spreading his wise words of wisdom to all different types of people. Even though his main target is salesman and people in leadership positions, many different people read this book in order to try and better themselves as people. “How to Win Friends and Influence People” has been a top seller for yours. The book was first written in 1936, but it has been revised many times. I have read several books in my life, but this was by far the most inspirational book that I have ever read.  I can’t wait to get out in the real world and try to use Carnegie’s techniques and tips. I have read reviews on this book and so many people said that this book has changed there life. Some salesman said that after reading this book, there cliental went up. They were more comfortable with talking to people, and mastered the art of selling their product.

My Life

My name is Todd Theis, and I just completed my junior year at the University of Southern Mississippi. This is my 3^rd year living in Hattiesburg and I have loved every minute of it. I am currently a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. I have one full year of school left until I receive my degree in business management.  I have no idea what I want to do after I graduate college. I have been trying to decide if I want to enter graduate school, or just go straight into the working world. I have really enjoyed college for the past 3 years and would like to continue my education, but the only thing is that graduate school is expensive and I have desire to pay for it. If I go into the working world, I would like to work for my dad. I worked for during the summer time when I was in middle school and high school. I would like to work in Sales and Marketing for his company because I consider myself a people’s person and I love talking to people. This is the 4^th English class I have taken and I am looking forward to it. I do not mind typing papers, and I would much rather type papers than take tests.  Since this is my 4^th English class, I have had some experience in writing, but I still have a lot of room for improvement and that is one thing I hope to get out of this class. To be honest, there is not really any certain type of writing that I enjoy. I just go with whatever the assignment is. My biggest fear in English classes is that I do not have all of the grammatical errors correct and I make mistakes with word usage. Other than that, I enjoy English and writing, but I Have no favorite type.
